“We must join the tens of millions all over the world who see in peace our most sacred responsibility.” - Paul Robeson
Paul Robeson was one of the most well-known singers and actors of the 1930s-1940s. He was also a scholar, athlete, lawyer, and activist. Because of his anti-imperialist politics and Communist affiliations, he was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. He had his passport illegally revoked and was denied the ability to work domestically or abroad. No venue in the US would hire him, and he wasn't permitted to leave the country.
Despite the pressures, Robeson remained a true internationalist socialist who supported the USSR, the liberation struggles of Africa, and the struggles against racism and capitalism inside the US.
